It appears as if the UNC basketball program is on the outs with one of its long-time recruiting targets, four-star in-state prospect De’Ante Green.

For quite some time, it seemed as if the North Carolina Tar Heels were in the lead for four-star class of 2022 prospect De’Ante Green. These days, however, that just doesn’t appear to be the case, as the Tar Heels seem to be backing off of Green while their long-time rival, the NC State Wolfpack, continue to ramp things up in his recruitment.

Kevin Keatts and company visited Green on Thursday, while fellow ACC programs Wake Forest and Florida State will do the same on Friday, that according to Stockrisers’ Jake Weingarten. Among the ACC teams not visiting Green this week are the Tar Heels, who went from prohibitive favorite in his recruitment to mere afterthought.

And why is that? We can’t be sure about that at this time, but perhaps it has something to do with the commitments that North Carolina got from Birmingham, Alabama native Will Shaver, and West Side High School’s Jalen Washington. Similar to Green, both players measure at 6-feet-9-inches tall, and definitely create more of a log jam in the UNC front court next year.

Keatts’ Wolfpack, on the other hand, don’t have a single pledge from a 2022 prospect as of now, and Green would presumably play a large part in their plans moving forward. If it’s opportunity that Green is looking for, NC State might be the better bet. If it’s winning games and competing at a high level, though, he might want to look elsewhere.
