The UNC Football program’s stay in the Top 10 of the Associated Press Top 25 poll was a short one.

After being ranked No. 10 in the preseason poll in August, UNC has fallen 14 spots to No. 24 in the Week 2 poll. That’s thanks to a 17-10 loss at Virginia Tech on Friday night a game that was close but one that also saw UNC struggle on offense throughout.  The Hokies benefitted and went from unranked to No. 19 in the new poll.

While it was a disappointing result on Friday night, UNC should be thankful that they are still in the Top 25. They were one of the big disappointments to open the season in all of college football and there is certainly proof that work needs to be done.

Heck, even head coach Mack Brown admitted that his team just wasn’t ready and were overrated to start the season.

Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M make up the top 5 in the new poll while Clemson, Cincinnati, Notre Dame, Iowa State and Iowa make up the rest of the Top 10.

The Atlantic Coast Conference had a total of four teams make the poll with Clemson leading the way at No. 6 followed by No. 19 Virginia Tech, No. 22 Miami and No. 24 North Carolina.

The good news for UNC is that they do have a chance to continue to climb the rankings and make a statement. It’s only Week 2 right now and they do have some favorable games coming up. But they are going to need to run the table if they want to see Clemson in the ACC title game this year.

The poll will return to its regularly scheduled release on Sundays beginning this week.
