While Hubert Davis and his UNC Basketball program are trying to put the finishing touches on their 2022 recruiting class, they have begun to lay the ground work on the 2023 cycle.

As it stands right now, UNC has offered a total of six prospects in the 2023 class headlined by five-stars Robert Dillingham and G.G. Jackson. The class does feature a variety of players in terms of positions and their ranking and among them is four-star forward Matas Buzelis.

The 6-foot-10, 175-pound small forward received his offer from UNC in early August, part of a spree where Davis offered three prospects in three days. But since then, things have been quiet in terms of Buzelis and the Tar Heels as the prospect prepares for more visits this Fall.

We don’t know the exact interest level from UNC with Buzelis but the prospect is starting to impress in his recruitment and this past week was no exception. Buzelis participated in the Crossroads Elite Invitational camp at the start of September and caught one analyst’s eye as a player that stood out to him.

Eric Bossi of 247Sports wrote on the invitational and who caught his eye. Among them was Buzelis as Bossi had this to say about him:

"Currently on a visit to Wake Forest, Buzelis was straight up spectacular and clearly the top performer of the event. Pushing 6-foot-10 his ability to handle the ball, shoot and create had me thinking that he was like some type of young, new age Toni Kukoc. Obviously, I’m not expecting him to be that good before he’s done, but I do think he’s got a bright future. Currently a four-star prospect, Buzelis will be a five-star when we update 2023 rankings and he’s pushing for the top 10, maybe even top five nationally. He’ll visit Florida State at the end of the month and recently saw Connecticut, DePaul and Kansas unofficially."

A few things to note from above. First, Bossi states that Buzelis should be a five-star prospect and challenge for a Top 10 spot in the latest prospect rankings. That’s big for different reasons and while it appears to be good news, that means that the pursuit and interest levels from other programs will ramp up meaning more competition.

The other thing to note is that Bossi mentioned some visits already lined up for the Fall but no mention of UNC getting a visit. That is something we will continue to monitor moving forward if UNC does show more interest.
