Cam Whitmore, one of the top wings in the class of 2022, has scheduled an official visit with the Villanova Wildcats, and it could spell trouble for the UNC basketball program.

Cam Whitmore, a rising four-star prospect and one of the nation’s top small forwards, has scheduled an official visit with the Villanova Wildcats. Whitmore’s trip to Philadelphia is set for September 17, just ahead of his college decision that’s expected to come some time at the end of this month or the beginning of October.

That could be a bad sign for schools not named Villanova — Illinois and North Carolina are his other finalists — as there’s a growing feeling that Whitmore is inching closer to a commitment to Jay Wright and the Wildcats. Could a good campus visit with the Wildcats sew up his recruitment in the closing days?

Recent predictions from analysts and insiders at Rivals and 247Sports favor Villanova, three to be exact, all of which have come over the past 10 days. First, it was a FutureCast vote from Rivals’ Jamie Shaw in favor of the Wildcats on September 25. Then, a pair of Crystal Ball picks came in on consecutive days in early September, furthering the growing feeling that Villanova has taken the front seat in Whitmore’s recruitment.

If he does, in fact, commit to Wright and the Wildcats, he’d be just the second player in the class of 2022 to do so. Brad Underwood and the Illini already have two — both four-star prospects — and the Tar Heels have a trio of recruits that has their class ranked inside the top five nationally. Needless to say, the Wildcats have room on their roster to add Whitmore to the fold.

We aren’t saying that the Whitmore recruitment is over by any means, but Villanova definitely appears to have momentum in securing the nation’s 27th overall prospect, and No. 8 small forward.
