The UNC football program will begin its 2022 season with a game against the Florida A&M Rattlers in Chapel Hill.

The North Carolina Tar Heels will begin their 2022 season with a game against the Florida A&M Rattlers at Kenan Memorial Stadium. The game, which was initially scheduled for September 17, will now take place on Saturday, August 27.

Agreed upon nearly a year ago, the game will be the first ever between the two schools. The Tar Heels will pay the Rattlers a $450,000 guarantee for participating in what will likely resemble an early-season tune-up for the rising ACC program. Florida A&M, an HBCU (historically black college/university) located in Tallahassee, is a member of the SWAC, and is the only historically black university in the Florida State University System.

After their game against the Rattlers in late August, the Tar Heels will play at Appalachian State on September 3 and then at Georgia State the following week. The rest of North Carolina’s road slate consists of games at Wake Forest, Duke, Miami and Virginia. They’ll be in Chapel Hill for bouts with Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech and North Carolina State.

Sam Howell will almost definitely be gone by the time all of this happens, what with his already high and continually rising stock in next year’s NFL Draft. It’ll likely be a junior Jacolby Criswell or a sophomore Drake Maye lining up under center at that point, with a new-look cast of players around them.
