The UNC Basketball program continues to build on what is a really good 2022 recruiting class with three prospects committed to Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels. And while UNC continues to pursue more players in that class, they are still paying attention to the 2023 cycle.

On Tuesday night, UNC officially offered an intriguing player in the 2023 class as five-star small forward Mackenzie Mgbako revealed that he has received an offer from the Tar Heels.

The 6-foot-7, 185-pound forward out of Gladstone, New Jersey becomes the fourth player to receive an offer from UNC joining Robert Dillingham, G.G. Jackson, and J.J. Taylor. The UNC offer is the 17th for Mgbako as he’s drawing interest from Duke, UCONN, Auburn, Georgetown, Ohio State and UCLA among other programs.

With a need for a wing moving forward, Mgbako could become a big target for Davis and his staff moving forward. He’s ranked No. 6 nationally, No. 2 small forward and the No. 2 player in the state of New Jersey per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

Most recently, Mgbako was named a standout at the annual Peach Jam event by 247Sports recruiting analyst Travis Branham as he had this to say about the forward’s game:

"The 6-foot-7, 185-pound small forward possesses tremendous physical tools for the position with his size, long arms and a strong frame. He is a high level athlete and is versatile on both ends of the floor, making for a mismatch as both a three and four given his natural ability to defend those positions and manipulate different areas on the offensive end.He can make shots from mid-range out to three and is an effective slasher and a good rebounder and showed that today, further helping his case for a bump come next 2023 rankings update."

It’s still very early in his recruitment but with UNC getting involved, this is a player we will certainly keep an eye on. We also could be headed for a Blue Blood battle between UNC and Duke, with Kentucky also likely to show more interest down the line as well.
