Former UNC basketball standout Kenny Williams has been named to the Charlotte Hornets’ Summer League roster.

The Charlotte Hornets revealed their 2021 Summer League roster on Monday, and former University of North Carolina basketball standout Kenny Williams made the cut. Oh, and never mind the error on the Hornets’ initial tweet that stated Williams was a member of the Louisville Cardinals. Williams, a native of Richmond, Virginia and a member of the Tar Heels’ 2017 NCAA Championship team, last played for the Austin Spurs of the NBA G-League.

It was there that Williams averaged 11 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 15 appearances last season while shooting 43 percent from the floor and 32.8 percent from three-point range. His numbers from the 2020-21 season were almost universally up from the year prior when he was freshly removed from his final year in college.

Most recently, Williams signed a contract with Bnei Herzliya Basket of the Israeli Basketball Premier League, but his season there was cut short due to injury. Now, Williams is back in the states and hoping to perform well this summer in hopes of earning a spot with an NBA team, whether it be at the highest level or back in the G-League.

In four seasons at North Carolina, Williams averaged 7.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He shot just under 44 percent for his career, and 34.2 percent from beyond the arc. His best season came as a junior during the 2017-18 campaign when he scored 11.4 points per game over 37 appearances — 36 of which he started. He had career-highs in shooting percentage (48.6) and three-point accuracy (40.2), while averaging 3.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.
