Things got off to a slow start for the UNC Football program and the 2022 class in terms of their standards. But with the NCAA allowing visits in June and players hitting campuses to meet with coaches and the program, things turned around.

The Tar Heels were able to land a few commitments in June and then turned around and added more in the month of July.

In total, the Tar Heels landed four players in the month of July pushing their total to 12 in the 2022 recruiting class. But where does that class stand?

The latest player to commit to UNC was four-star linebacker Sebastian Cheeks, an Illinois native that is the Tar Heels’ highest rated recruit checking in at No. 131 overall. Cheeks beat out running back Omarion Hampton who committed just a week earlier as Hampton is ranked No. 144 overall in the class.

With the addition of Cheeks, UNC saw their class jump some spots in the 247Sports recruiting rankings and have made the climb inside the top 20 to No. 17. UNC also has the No. 4 ranked class in the Atlantic Coast Conference behind only Florida State (No. 8), Clemson (No. 10), and Virginia Tech. (No. 15).

There is still a long ways to go in the 2022 class and UNC does have a lot of targets remaining on their recruiting board. It’s safe to say that they aren’t done adding and that we should see this class continue to stay in the Top 20. That would be huge for a program that had the No. 14 class in 2021 and No. 13 in 2020.
