With the July evaluation period here, it’s allowed coaches to get out to events to watch prospects and evaluate their options for the 2022 recruiting class. And that’s exactly what Hubert Davis and the UNC Basketball program has done.

Davis and his staff have been out on the recruiting trail and they have their eyes on a few more prospects in 2022. As it stands now, UNC has a three-man class for 2022 landing commitments from five-star center Jalen Washington, four-star guard Seth Trimble and three-star center Will Shaver.

But Davis and the Tar Heels are hoping for at least one more recruit to commit and one of the top targets left is four-star forward Cam Whitmore.

The Severn, Maryland native is a top 60 player in the class but is rising fast and should see his ranking increase eventually. Whitmore has a total of 20 offers and took a visit to Maryland earlier in June. But where does his recruitment stand? Well it appears to be more open than we thought according to a recruiting analyst.

247Sports Recruiting analyst Eric Bossi wrote on Whitmore earlier in the week, touching on his recruitment and who could be the favorites:

"When Whitmore first started to see his stock soar in June, the assumption across the recruiting world was that Whitmore would be right in Jay Wright’s wheelhouse and that Nova would be tough to beat. I’d never want to rule them out here but opinions about just how deep they are varied when discussing his recruitment with sources at the Peach Jam. Some thought that UNC could be the team to beat while others thought the schools closest to home, Maryland and Georgetown, held the clear advantage. My assessment is that it is just to early to declare a leader. I wish I had more, but there just hasn’t been much intel leaking about where Whitmore could end up."

As Bossi notes, there might not be a clear favorite and he’s heard that North Carolina, Villanova, Georgetown and Maryland at one point have all been considered the favorites at one point in the recruitment.

North Carolina recently offered and that does make an impact in his recruitment. They appear to be in good shape at least and should get a visit later on this Summer.  This recruitment doesn’t appear to be coming to a close anytime soon which should benefit North Carolina as they will have more time to leave a lasting impression.
