The UNC Basketball recruiting board for the 2022 class is starting to take shape a bit more as Hubert Davis and his staff are identifying their top targets.

UNC is off to a great start with three players committed, landing those verbals from five-star center Jalen Washington, four-star guard Seth Trimble and three-star center Will Shaver. The class is currently No. 1 overall here in Mid-July but there is still a long ways to go before the 2022 cycle is wrapped up.

And with the live evaluation period officially back here in July, the Tar Heels have had their eyes on a few recruits.

The staff was in South Carolina for the annual Nike Peach Jam where they watched a few different players this weekend so far. We already told you about a 7-foot prospect that the Tar Heels watched and now we have news on another five-star recruit.

Per Eric Bossi of 247Sports, the Tar Heels had coaches watching five-star guard Zion Cruz at the Peach Jam on Friday.  And apparently they weren’t the only ones:

"For PSA, five-star Zion Cruz had an off game shooting and there wasn’t anybody on the perimeter who picked up the slack. On the positive side, recent VCU commit Christian Fermin looks like a nice post player pickup for the Rams.So how about the coach watch? From my spot on the elevated track I saw head coaches from places like Auburn (Bruce Pearl surely on Cruz watch), North Carolina (also watching Cruz), Oral Roberts, Providence, Saint Louis, St. John’s, Texas A&M, Tulsa and others. Among the assistants I saw were coaches from Florida State, Memphis, Oklahoma, Oregon, TCU and Texas Tech."

UNC recently got involved with Cruz, offering him last week and officially entering their names into the race for the talented five-star guard. The 6-foot-5, 175-pound guard out of Hillside, New Jersey has a total of 20 offers and has taken two visits already. He does plan on visiting UNC already and is in the process of setting that up.

But right now, it’s tough to tell where the Tar Heels stand in this race. The good news is that UNC is continuing to show interest and there appears to be legit interest from Cruz as well.

Next. UNC building a relationship with key five-star. dark
