UNC Basketball: Will Hubert Davis target rising 2024 recruit?
By Zack Pearson
The focus for Hubert Davis and the UNC Basketball program has been on the 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes so far.
Davis has found success with their three-man 2022 class that is currently ranked No. 1 overall here in mid-July. As for 2023, Davis and his staff have established their top targets and appear to be in good shape for a five-star in-state recruit, Robert Dillingham.
But what about 2024? There is still A LONG ways to go in that cycle and the focus hasn’t shifted there just yet. We have already put out a post on a potential in-state target with power forward Jarin Stevenson and potential interest from UNC. Now, another in-state prospect is on the rise and gaining some national attention.
At last weekend’s Adidas 3SSB event near Birmingham, North Carolina product Paul McNeil caught the eye of 247Sports recruiting analyst Eric Bossi for his play:
"I actually happened upon him back in April and was impressed with his 6-foot-5 size, ideal basketball frame and feel for the game. What impressed more was his jump shot. Finding him during an hour where I was just hoping to find a decent game was nice.On Saturday, he was a guy that I made time to see to him and he was every bit as impressive during a second look as he was the first time around. His ability to shoot the ball from deep (he had seven threes), steady approach and overall maturity was well beyond his years. We are talking about a kid that only recently turned 15 so you never want to get too crazy, but McNeil looks like a legitimate high major prospect and a player that will surely find a spot in our initial ranking of the class of 2024 after the summer ends."
Bossi went on to say that McNeil does have one offer so far, with Tennessee being the first to extend an offer after watching him play last Friday night. It’s still very early in this recruitment and there isn’t even a ranking on 247Sports yet for the recruit.
The 6-foot-5-inch, 175-pound Rockingham, North Carolina native will certainly be a prospect to watch moving forward. I imagine that North Carolina will show interest in him eventually, with him being an in-state recruit but the way his play is going, most of the top programs should be showing interest in McNeil.
