The UNC basketball program is still heavily favored in the recruitment of 4-star power forward and class of 2022 prospect De’Ante Green.

Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels have a growing list of 2022 recruiting targets, but De’Ante Green is one they’ve had their sights set on for quite some time now.

The Tar Heels offered Green a scholarship back in December of 2020 when former UNC head coach Roy Williams was still at the helm. But in his time since taking over the program from the three-time national title-winning coach, Davis has picked up with Green where his predecessor left off, pushing for a commitment from the 6-foot-9, 215-pound power forward.

His work with Green appears to have paid off, because despite the somewhat surprising coaching change that took place three months ago, UNC is still seen as the prohibitive favorite to land the Swannanoa, North Carolina native.

A number of respected members of the recruiting community — 247Sports’ Jerry Meyer and Eric Bossi, and Rivals’ Jamie Shaw and Davis Sisk — all submitted predictions in favor of the Tar Heels between late January and early March, before the coaching change took place. And none of the recruiting experts, to this point, have changed course. The picks from both Meyer and Bossi came with a high level of confidence, making the Tar Heels’ edge in Green’s recruitment seem that much more substantial.

That’s a great sign for the Tar Heels, who are hoping to sign the No. 1 player in the state of North Carolina. Along with being the top player in the Tar Heel state, Green is a consensus top-15 prospect among power forwards in the class, and ranked as high as 61st overall — that being in the ESPN100. He’s ranked similarly in the 247Sports Composite at No. 85, though he’s all the way back at 133rd in the Rivals150.

Green compiled his list of a half-dozen finalists in the spring, naming Florida State, NC State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest as the five schools that presumably trail North Carolina for the time being. We aren’t certain yet when Green will announce his college decision, but we’ll continue to follow his recruitment in the coming months.
