The UNC Football program is celebrating Independence Day in a big way by adding to their 2022 recruiting class on Sunday.

Mack Brown and his staff received another verbal commitment for the 2022 class, this time from a three-star prospect out of the state of Alabama. Quarterback Conner Harrell has decided to end his recruitment on what is a busy day for commitments across college football and has committed to North Carolina.

Harrell pledged his commitment to the program on Sunday night with this tweet:

The 6-foot-1, 191-pound quarterback is the ninth player to offer his commitment to the program and the first in the month of July after a busy month of June for the program. He picked the Tar Heels over finalists Arizona State, Michigan, and Northwestern.

Harrell is ranked No. 683 overall, No. 44 quarterback and the No. 26 player in the state of Alabama.  He becomes the seventh out-of-state recruit to commit to the program, which is a little unusual since Brown and his staff have really done well and put a focus on in-state recruiting.

He went on a few visits to Chapel Hill and it was enough to earn his commitment and end his recruitment.

By adding Harrell, UNC adds some depth to the quarterback position for the future. With Sam Howell likely leaving after this season, the Tar Heels will turn to Drake Maye or Jacolby Criswell for the 2022 season. That gives Harrell the chance to sit and learn behind those two before potentially taking over the reigns as the starter in 2024.

The Tar Heels currently hold a Top 40 class overall with plenty of time and recruiting targets left to improve on that ranking and add to that class.
