UNC Basketball: Tar Heels to host Michigan in ACC/Big Ten Challenge
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program will be at home for the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference/Big Ten Challenge per a report on Monday. And it looks like they will be tested early in non-conference play.
Per Jon Rothstein of College Hoops Today, North Carolina is set to host Big Ten regular season champion Michigan in the annual event. After playing at Iowa last year, UNC will return home for the challenge this year although their last time hosting the event in the Dean Dome didn’t go so well losing to Ohio State.
Both Michigan and UNC are projected to be ranked in the preseason Top 25 going into the 2021-22 season, so this should be a battle between ranked teams come late November/early December.
The rest of the matchups per Rothstein are as follows:
- Duke at Ohio State
- Louisville at Michigan State
- Florida State at Purdue
- Indiana at Syracuse
- Nebraska at NC State
- Wisconsin at Georgia Tech
- Iowa at Virginia
- Notre Dame at Illinois
- Clemson at Rutgers
- Miami at Penn State
- Minnesota at Pitt
- Northwestern at Wake Forest
- Virginia Tech at Maryland
As is usually the case, UNC’s matchup will be a primetime showdown on ESPN either Tuesday night or Wednesday night of the event. The full schedule with dates and times will be released in the coming weeks.
This will also be the second time UNC and Michigan have met up in the past four seasons for the challenge as the Wolverines beat the Tar Heels 84-67 back in 2018 when both teams were ranked. Overall, this will be the third time UNC and Michigan have met in the event with each team winning one game.
The Tar Heels will enter this event 10-12 overall but have lost three-straight games. The ACC hasn’t won the event since 2017 with the Big Ten winning the previous two and the two conferences tying in 2018.
