UNC Basketball: Tar Heels ‘felt like a family’ for Seth Trimble
Class of 2022 UNC basketball commit Seth Trimble says that comfort played a huge part in his decision, noting that he ‘fit right in’ during his visit to Chapel Hill.
Seth Trimble committed to the University of North Carolina last week, giving first-year head coach Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels their second commitment from the class of 2022. Trimble, who joined 3-star center Will Shaver as current members of the Tar Heels’ two-man class, gives the program its future point guard and a likely starter for multiple seasons to come.
A 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and the brother of former Tar Heel J.P. Tokoto, Trimble is ranked 54th in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s moved up 42 spots from his previous perch at No. 96 last summer. Similarly, Trimble saw his ranking improve from No. 109 to No. 34 in the 2022 Rivals150. He’s a top-10 player at his position according to both recruiting outlets, and the No. 1 player in the state of Wisconsin.
He brings with him a load of talent and athleticism, and a versatile skill set that should prove useful for the Tar Heels once current starting point guard Caleb Love leaves Chapel Hill for the NBA — something I wouldn’t be shocked to see happen in 2022. Trimble is a good shooter, slasher, ball-handler and distributor. He can facilitate his team’s offense, lead the fast break and play solid defense, so it’s really no wonder why the Tar Heels wanted Trimble on their side.
In a recent interview with Inside Carolina’s Sherrell McMillan, Trimble talked about the importance that comfort level played in his college commitment, and how his trip to Chapel Hill made him want to join a long history of great point guards to play at UNC.
"“I chose UNC because I already had a good feeling about it before the official visit” Trimble said. “But when we got to Chapel Hill, it really felt like a family. The environment was amazing, the campus is amazing, the coaches were great, and I just felt super comfortable. I felt like I could definitely spend my college career at the University. . .. . . It’s huge for me to be in that tradition. Kenny Smith, Phil Ford, Ray Felton, Ty Lawson, Marcus Paige, all those guys. It’s not a coincidence that that many great guards have come out of UNC. To be able to carry on that role – to be the next one – it’s an honor for me. I loved watching Marcus Paige. He was a lights out shooter, super active, and a really big spark at times for the team. I grew up watching him, so I’ll always have that love of watching his game.”"
Trimble had more than a dozen scholarship offers at the time of his commitment. His decision to attend North Carolina was at the expense of Illinois, Iowa, Marquette, Michigan and Wisconsin, among others. It was Juwan Howard and the Wolverines that appeared to have the clear lead in Trimble’s recruitment until the final weeks leading up to his announcement. But just like his brother did from 2012 to 2015, Trimble will suit up in Carolina blue for the foreseeable future.
The Tar Heels have a dozen other scholarship offers out to 2022 prospects, and are keeping a close watch on a number of others. They hope to add at least a couple more pieces to their current recruiting haul, which ranks sixth in the nation according to the 247Sports team rankings.
