The UNC Basketball program missed out on four-star forward Dawson Garcia a few years back but now they potentially have a chance to end up with him anyways.

Just a few days ago Garcia announced that he’s entering his name in the transfer portal while participating in the G-League combine. And although he’s leaving the door open for a return to Marquette, him being in the transfer portal has opened up the opportunity for other teams to contact him and lure him away.

One of those teams that is showing interest early on appears to be Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels.  Per Jeff Borzello, UNC are a school that has shown interest in the power forward already:

Joining UNC on that list are Illinois, Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma State, Minnesota and George Mason making for an interesting list.

For UNC, they have already added two players from the transfer portal this offseason by landing Justin McKoy out of Virginia and then Brady Manek from Oklahoma. With Armando Bacot back, it helps UNC in the post but getting a player like Garcia down there to compliment him would be huge.

Garcia averaged 13 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while shooting 48 percent from the field for Marquette last season. He had 24 points and 11 rebounds in Marquette’s upset win in the Dean Dome a year ago, so UNC knows first hand what he can do on the court.

The recruit was a big target for Roy Williams a few years back but Garcia opted to pick Marquette over the Tar Heels, Minnesota, Indiana and Kansas among others. He was also rated as a top 50 recruit coming out of high school and was a big get for Marquette.

With UNC showing interest, Garcia is a player to watch over the next few weeks in terms of his new recruitment.
