Former UNC basketball player and 2017 national champion announces college decision

Former North Carolina point guard Seventh Woods has committed to Morgan State University in order to utilize his remaining season of college eligibility — one that comes via the NCAA granting an additional year for student-athletes due to the affects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the 2020-21 season.

Woods, who spent three seasons with the Tar Heels prior to transferring to South Carolina last year, made the announcement via Instagram and Twitter on Monday night. “I’m ready, more ready than ever,” Woods captioned a photo in which he’s donning the jersey of his new team.

Once a highly-touted top-50 recruit out of Hammond School in Columbia, South Carolina, Woods averaged 1.8 points, 1.5 assists and 1.1 rebounds in 94 appearances with the Tar Heels from 2016 to 2019. He struggled to shoot with any kind of efficiency during his three seasons in Chapel Hill (34.8 percent from the floor and 24 percent from three-point range), and he turned the ball over at high rate. He started just one game for the Tar Heels prior to transferring to the Gamecocks in 2020.

At South Carolina, Woods started 13-of-18 games, and averaged a career-high 19 minutes per contest. He had personal-bests in points (5.4) and rebounds (1.7), but again struggled with turnovers, compiling a 1-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also connected on just 5-of-27 shots beyond the arc for a meager 18.5 percent mark from downtown.

Now, at his third school in five years, Woods will try to make more of an impact on his new team with better shot selection and fewer mistakes. We’re wishing him all the best in his latest endeavor, and look forward to watching him in his final season of college ball.
