While the 2021 NBA playoffs are continuing on, one former UNC Basketball standout received some bad news about his Summer in terms of training and playing ball.

Chicago Bulls point guard Coby White underwent successful surgery on his left shoulder on Thursday, the team announced via a press release. The team went on to say that White suffered the injury this past weekend while engaged in basketball activities away from the team.

White has been back to UNC’s campus this offseason to play in pickup games with former and current Tar Heels, HOWEVER, it’s doubtful that this injury was suffered in one of those games as the release said over the weekend. Either way, it’s tough news for the 21-year-old.

Ouch.

The former Tar Heel guard is sent to enter his third season and a very important offseason with the Bulls. White struggled at times last season playing alongside Zach LaVine and was even benched at one point. But he picked it up after being inserted back into the starting lineup towards the end of the season for the Bulls and showed some promise for being a good player in the league.

As for White’s future with the team, Chicago was already going to be looking for another guard to add to the rotation and the minutes could be numbered for him. Now, with this injury it’s not really good news for his chances to earn more minutes and a permanent spot in the NBA.

White averaged 15.1 points, 4.8 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game in 69 games for the Bulls last season. Those numbers were an improvement from his rookie year where he started just one game and played behind Kris Dunn.

He could be back just in time for the start of training camp as he will be reevaluated in four months per the team.
