UNC Basketball: Top 10 wins for Tar Heels over Coach K
By Zack Pearson
February 6, 1998: UNC 97, Duke 73
It was a game that was talked about for weeks leading up to the February 6th showdown in the Dean Dome during the 1998 season. But when it came time for the actual game, UNC and Duke didn’t disappoint.
The No. 2-ranked Tar Heels left no doubts in their big 97-73 win over No. 1 ranked Duke in the Dean Dome backed by Antawn Jamison’s 35 points and 11 rebounds as UNC grabbed a 16-point halftime lead. That lead would stay in double digits for the entire second half as UNC controlled the game and had the home crowd rocking with excitement.
Ed Cota finished with 12 points and 12 assists to help pace UNC’s offense and give Jamison some support. The Tar Heels shot 68 percent from the field as a team and the 24-point win at the time was the most lopsided victory in the series since 1982.
The win moved UNC up in the polls to the top spot and set up an even more anticipated rematch later on in Durham to end the regular season.
