March 3, 1984: UNC 96, Duke 83 (2OT)

With Coach K building up Duke’s program, he already had memorable showdowns with the Tar Heels going into this 1984 matchup inside Carmichael Arena.

In a game that featured Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins and Johnny Dawkins, the two teams went back-and-forth with no lead going past five months in regulation.  This one was an instant classic and had some late-game heroics from Matt Doherty. Duke’s Mark Alaire converted on a three-point play with 20 seconds left to give the Blue Devils a 73-71 lead and UNC followed it up with a missed jumper that would have tied it.

With hope feeling lost, Duke’s Danny Meagher missed the front end of a one-and-one giving the Tar Heels a chance. Doherty took an inbounds pass the length of the court and drained a 14-foot jumper with one second left to tie the game and send it to overtime.

The first overtime ended with Dawkins hitting a layup with 8 seconds left to tie it at 79 and force another overtime. But in that period, it was a clutch three-point play by Jordan that gave the Tar Heels the early lead that they wouldn’t let go. Following Jordan’s play, Perkins made three-straight shots to boost UNC’s lead and win the game.

The Tar Heels improved to 26-1 overall and 14-0 in ACC play.
