March 8, 2009: UNC 79, Duke 71

The 2009 season was a special one for North Carolina as they captured Williams’ second national championship in what was truly a dominating NCAA Tournament run. But one of the highlights from that season came on senior night where the Tar Heels honored one of their best recruiting classes ever headlined by Tyler Hansbrough and Danny Green.

The March 8th meeting between the two teams was not only the senior class playing in their final home game but the ACC regular season title was on the line. UNC entered the game as the top team in the conference but a Duke win would clinch a share of the title for both teams.

And while it was senior night, it was junior point guard Ty Lawson who stole the show. Lawson finished with 25 points, 9 assists and, 8 rebounds in the win, doing so with a hurt toe. Lawson’s performance included scoring 21 of his 25 points in the second half as UNC started to pull away a bit from the Blue Devils.

UNC would complete the sweep of Duke and then go on to win the national title, making it a year to remember for Tar Heels fans.
