UNC Basketball: Top 10 wins for Tar Heels over Coach K
By Zack Pearson
February 1, 2001: UNC 85, Duke 83
The February 1, 2001 meeting between the two teams was the 107th meeting, 51st when they were both ranked and ninth when they were both ranked inside the Top 5 at the time. And it turned out to be a thriller.
No. 4 North Carolina and No. 2 Duke fought back-and-forth throughout the game, and in typical UNC-Duke fashion, it came down to the wire.
After Mike Dunleavy hit a three-pointer with 9.3 seconds left to tie the game, UNC center Brendan Haywood was followed on the ensuing possession. Facing a tough Cameron Crazy crowd, Haywood sunk both free throws with 1.3 seconds left to give the Tar Heels an 85-83 lead and eventual victory. It was a gutty performance from the Tar Heels on the road led by Joseph Forte’s 24-point and 16-rebound performance to end UNC’s five-game losing streak to the Blue Devils.
Jason Capel had 20 points while Haywood finished with 14.
