UNC Basketball: Top 10 wins for Tar Heels over Coach K
By Zack Pearson
March 4, 2006: UNC 83, Duke 76
Senior nights are always special for players playing in their final home game of their college careers. On the night of March 4th, 2006 the No. 1 ranked Duke Blue Devils were set to honor J.J. Redick and Sheldon Williams for their careers in Durham.
But North Carolina, led by a few freshmen, had other plans.
Not many people gave the No. 15 Tar Heels a shot on senior night in Durham, nor should they have as UNC was coming off a national championship in the year prior and lost Marvin Williams, Raymond Felton, Sean May and Rashad McCants to the NBA draft. However, this was the night a new UNC legend was born and his name was Tyler Hansbrough.
The freshman out of Missouri helped lead the Tar Heels to a 83-76 stunning victory at Duke to beat the Blue Devils, finishing with 27 points and 10 rebounds including a late deep three-pointer to seal the victory. Fellow freshmen Marcus Ginyard added 12 points and Bobby Frasor had 10 as the Tar Heels earned a signature win that year.
This was also the start of that 2005 recruiting class going 4-0 at Cameron Indoor Stadium, putting their stamp on the program.
It’s tough to top this victory over Duke as it will go down in history as one of the best games for a UNC team that really had no business winning that game.
