March 6, 2005: UNC 75, Duke 73

The 2005 season was a magical one for the Tar Heels as they captured Roy Williams’ first title as a head coach. But it was the season finale and senior night game against Duke that may have helped them go on their run in March.

UNC was ranked No. 2 entering the game and were hosting No. 6 Duke in what would go down as an instant classic. The two teams battled back and forth with the Blue Devils holding a late 73-71 lead, Raymond Felton went to the free-throw line with the chance to tie it. Felton made the first to cut the lead to 73-72 but then missed the backend as a scramble ensued for the rebound.

Freshman Marvin Williams was at the right place at the right time, grabbing the rebound and going straight up with the shot. His bank shot would fall and a foul was called as the Dean Dome erupted with UNC taking a 74-73 lead. Williams drained the free throw to give the Tar Heels a 75-73 lead with 17 seconds left.

J.J. Redick’s three-point attempt clanked the back of the iron and Daniel Ewings follow up was short as the Tar Heels held on for an incredible victory.

This game was an instant classic and was the loudest the Dean Dome had ever been as the Tar Heels sealed the victory.
