What did the North Carolina Tar Heels do this school year that no other ACC program was able to accomplish?

The 2020-2021 school year was a very successful one for North Carolina athletics. Many of the school’s athletic programs had very positive seasons, including a national championship run from the women’s field hockey team.

You know your program is good when the team qualifies for postseason play. Not every school can say that they qualified for the postseason tournament in their respective sport, but North Carolina can claim that they accomplished something that no other ACC program did this past school year.

North Carolina is the only ACC school that reached the postseason in the following sports: football, men’s basketball and baseball. This is a major accomplishment, and shows just how much success each program had during their respective seasons.

The UNC football program got the ball rolling in the fall, as their electric offense helped lead Mack Brown’s team to an 8-4 record. Their impressive regular season earned them a trip to a New Year’s Six game, as the Tar Heels took on Texas A&M in the Orange Bowl on January 2.

After last year’s NCAA tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19, the UNC basketball program was looking for redemption for their 14-19 campaign during the 2019-2020 season. In what ended up being Roy Williams’ last season as the Tar Heels head coach, the team put together an 18-11 season.

The Tar Heels earned a bid in the NCAA tournament, as they were the eight seed in the South region. Unfortunately, North Carolina didn’t make it far, as the No. 9 seed Wisconsin handed them an early exit out of the tournament.

Recently, the UNC baseball program wrapped up their regular season. In Scott Forbes’ first year as the team’s head coach, the Tar Heel finished with a 26-24 record. North Carolina did just enough to make this year’s NCAA tournament, as they were one of the last four teams to earn a bid.

The postseason trips from the above mentioned teams are just some of the many accomplishments throughout the North Carolina athletics department during the 2020-2021 school year. However, if you’re looking for some bragging rights to bring up to your friends, colleagues or even rivals who root for other ACC schools, make sure you use this fact in your future discussions!
