As we sit here in the month of May, we still have a bit to go until tipoff for the 2021-22 college basketball season. But when that season begins, the UNC Basketball program is set to usher in a new era under head coach Hubert Davis.

The new head coach took over in April with the sudden retirement of Roy Williams and will look to get UNC’s program back to where they are expected to be following a disappointing early exit from the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

And while the full schedule for the Tar Heels upcoming season hasn’t been released yet, the program got a glimpse of a game early on in the season.

Per college basketball reporter Jon Rothstein, North Carolina is set to take on Purdue in the first game of the 2021 Hall of Fame Tip-Off at Mohegan Sun. Rothstein reported the news on Friday afternoon saying that it’s officially expected to be announced sometime next week.

The tournament kicks off on November 20th with the Tar Heels and Boilermakers matching up as well as Villanova and Tennessee. The winners of the two first round games will then meet on November 21st to be crowned the winner of the event at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut, just ahead of Thanksgiving.

While there are always bigger formatted tournaments like the Maui Invite which UNC played in last year, this year’s Hall of Fame Tipoff is set to be one of the better early-season events with four really good teams that should be preseason Top 25 teams.

North Carolina and Purdue have met twice before with the Tar Heels owning a 2-0 lead in the series. They last met on November 24th, 1999 with the Tar Heels beating the Boilermakers 90-75.
