UNC Basketball: Tar Heels rival getting involved with top 2022 recruiting target
By Zack Pearson
Hubert Davis and his UNC Basketball staff are going to have a busy Summer in terms of recruiting with the NCAA set to lift restrictions beginning in June. Over the past month or so, Davis has been able to shape his recruiting board by identifying top targets in each class.
For the 2022 recruiting class, the Tar Heels have a total of 10 active offers out to prospects that are uncommitted and have been doing their homework on more. One prospect that is high on North Carolina’s list is is four-star shooting guard Nick Smith Jr.
The Sherwood, Arkansas native is ranked No. 26 overall, No. 2 at his position and the No. 1 player in the state of Arkansas per the 247Sports recruiting rankings. He’s racked up a total of 22 offers so far including from North Carolina, Kansas, and Kentucky among others. But now another Blue Blood program is showing interest.
According to Jake Weingarten of Stockrisers, Duke and Oklahoma are the latest teams to show interest in Smith Jr.:
Now, that above tweet says a lot more about Oklahoma’s involvement as new Sooners’ head coach Porter Moser had a virtual meeting with the talented recruit. However, when Duke is involved, it’s never good news for the Tar Heels as they prefer not to get into a recruiting battle with their rival.
Smith Jr. does have visits lined up this Summer beginning in June but UNC has yet to receive an official visit date. That could obviously change over the coming weeks and it’s not like UNC is in bad shape in this recruitment. They did make Smith Jr.’s top 10 earlier in the year and we do expect them to be in the recruitment until the end despite the tough competition with Kansas, Kentucky and now Duke.
