2011 comeback against Miami
By John Ellis
On March 11, 2011, in Greensboro, North Carolina the stage was set for the four quarterfinal games of the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament. The first game of the day featured the #1 seed North Carolina Tar Heels against the #9 seed Miami Hurricanes. For the entire first half and the majority of the second, Miami dominated every phase of the game. Then after Miami’s Johnson scored a layup with 9:56 left in regulation to put Miami up 53-34, things began to get interesting.
Leslie McDonald comes down and buries a three-pointer making the score 53-37. After a Miami turnover, John Henson scores on a lob from Kendall Marshall making the score 53-39 with 9:09 remaining. On the other end, Miami is fouled and converts the two free throws increasing the margin to 55-39. After a Carolina turnover, Kendall Marshall forces a five-second count to give the ball back to the Tar Heels.
Over the next two minutes and four seconds, Carolina would outscore Miami 12-0 on four straight three-point jumpers. Thanks to one by McDonald, two by Marshall, and one by Harrison Barnes the score was now 55-51 with 5:13 remaining. Miami would then get called for a shot clock violation but on their next possession, they would make one out of two at the line to make the score 56-51.
Following a two-point jumper from Leslie McDonald to make the score 56-53, Miami was called for an offensive foul on the other end with 4:04 remaining in regulation. Tyler Zeller would score on a hook shot to get within one but then Johnson ended a Miami field goal drought of over six minutes when he scores a layup to increase the margin back to three.
Over the final 3:29, Zeller would outscore the entire Miami team 6-1. The last bucket came after an incredible drive and pass from Kendall Marshall with 0:01 left on the clock. Carolina had completed one of the greatest comebacks in ACC Tournament history to advance to the semifinals 61-59 by outscoring Miami 27-6 over the final 9:56. It is a game like this that makes us all proud to be a Tar Heel.
