Winning at Duke in Tyler Hansbrough’s freshman season

By Andrew Reynolds

As we celebrate the top coaching moments of Roy Williams at Keeping It Heel, we would be crazy not to include the time UNC beat Duke at Cameron in 2006.

Coming into the game No. 1 Duke was 27-2 and 14-1 in ACC play and it was senior night for Duke players JJ Redick and Shelden Williams, two infamous players in the UNC-Duke rivalry.

In the games before, UNC dominated Virginia 99-54 while Duke lost a close game to Florida State 79-74. First-years Tyler Hansbrough, Danny Green, and Marcus Ginyard were playing incredible ball on a respectable UNC team that was 20-6 and 10-4 in ACC play.

With an 83-76 score, the game was close to the final seconds as UNC led by three in the final seconds before two successful free-throws from first-year Tyler Hansbrough pushed it to five.

This was an all-around great night for UNC basketball, not only is beating Duke the quintessential victory for UNC fans, but it was the first time Roy Williams beat Duke as head coach of UNC. Also, this was the first time UNC beat Duke at Cameron since 2001.

Plus ruining the senior night for Redick and Williams must be a plus.

This game stands out not only for those factors, but this was the first victory at Duke the first-year class of the 2005-06 team accomplished en route to a perfect 4-0 in their careers at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
