Roy Williams’ 900th career victory

By Blake Cockrum

In one of the biggest wins of his final season as head coach of the Tar Heels, Roy Williams collected career win No. 900 in a thrilling comeback victory over the Florida State Seminoles in front of a raucous crowd at the Dean Smith Center.

After trailing by as many as 16 points and a dozen at halftime, North Carolina played terrific basketball following the intermission. They outscored the Seminoles by 20 points in the game’s final 20 minutes, helping Williams earn the milestone victory over the nation’s 11th-ranked team.

In doing so, Williams joined just three other college basketball coaches — Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, and Bob Knight — to accumulate 900 victories over the course of a career. He also became the fastest to do so, needing just 1,161 games to achieve the feat, 22 games fewer than Krzyzewski.

Williams went on to pass Knight just a couple of weeks later, earning his 903rd career victory in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal game against the Virginia Tech Hokies. That win moved Williams into third place on the all-time list, a position he will likely relinquish next season to West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins (900).
