Luke Maye sends UNC to the Final Four

by Zack Pearson

The 2017 North Carolina championship team had a heck of a run to deliver the program’s sixth title. But if it wasn’t for one player in the Elite 8, they wouldn’t have had the shot to win it all in the first place.

After surviving Arkansas in the second round, UNC cruised past Butler in the Sweet 16 to set up a matchup with Kentucky in the Elite 8 in Memphis. It was a rematch of a classic game earlier in the year at the CBS Sports Classic with the Wildcats coming out ahead.

In this one, it was the Tar Heels who got the last laugh.

UNC had a few chances to seal it at the end but missed free throws kept Kentucky in it and a Malik Monk three-pointer with 7.2 seconds left to tie it at 73 all, the Tar Heels quickly inbounded the ball to catch the Wildcats on a break. In traditional fashion, Williams didn’t call a timeout and let the game play out. And he’s glad he did.

Theo Pinson took the ball the length of the court and then kicked it out to Luke Maye from the left wing as the sophomore drained a jumper with .3 seconds left to win it all for the Tar Heels. The call is even better with Jim Nantz saying “Maye for the win…North Carolina! with .3 seconds to go!” will always be a historic one for Tar Heels fans. Watch the shot below:

It’s one of the biggest shots not only for UNC Basketball but in NCAA Tournament history.
