UNC Basketball: Hubert Davis reveals Armando Bacot’s future?
By Zack Pearson
We are still months away from tipoff for the 2021-22 college basketball season as a new era of UNC Basketball will be ushered in. With Hubert Davis taking over the reigns for Roy Williams, it will be interesting to see how this Tar Heels team plays when they hit the courts this Summer for practices and Fall.
With some turnover on UNC’s roster including the transfer of Walker Kessler and Garrison Brooks plus Day’Ron Sharpe heading to the NBA, the Tar Heels’ roster will look a little different. However, they should get some good news in the form of a key starter from last year returning.
Center Armando Bacot declared for the NBA Draft last month but opted not to hire an agent, leaving the door open for a potential return to the roster. On Monday, Davis may have hinted what Bacot’s plans are for next season and it’s good news for the Tar Heels.
While appearing on Jon Rothstein’s podcast as a guest Monday, Davis told the reporter that he wants to play with versatile big men and that Bacot “will be back” next season:
Well, there we go!
It’s still not official, official but if Davis is saying this then it certainly makes us believe that it’s going to be true. Getting Bacot back for a third year would be huge for the Tar Heels, especially after the improvement he made from his first season in Chapel Hill to his second.
Bacot averaged 12.3 points, and 7.8 rebounds per game while shooting 62.8 percent from the field as a sophomore. He emerged as one of UNC’s top big men in the rotation becoming a starter from day one. If Bacot can take that next step in his junior year, the Tar Heels should be in better shape in terms of their production in the paint.
