As the calendar flipped to the month of May this weekend, UNC Basketball head coach Hubert Davis put a new target on North Carolina’s 2022 recruiting board.

On Sunday night, Davis and his staff at UNC officially extended an offer out to a prospect in the 2022 class, making him the latest to receive an offer from the head coach who took over in early April. Five-star power forward Jalen Washington announced via Twitter that he had officially received an offer on Sunday night.

Here is the message Washington put late Sunday night:

The Gary, Indiana native is a 6-foot-9, 210-pound power forward that is among the top players in the 2022 class earning a five-star ranking. He’s ranked No. 20 nationally, No. 4 at is position and the No. 1 player in the state of Indiana per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

Washington has a total of 11 offers in his recruitment so far with UNC being the latest to join the race. In addition to the Tar Heels, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State, Ohio State, Stanford and Purdue also being involved. The Buckeyes offered Washington over the weekend as well.

The forward is starting to see his recruitment heat up a bit here with these new offers but his play is also another big reason why. On Saturday, Washington participated in the Bill Hensley Run-N-Slam in Fort Wayne and he caught the eye of 247Sports recruiting analyst Eric Bossi:

"Currently ranked No. 22 by 247Sports and No. 20 in the industry generated 247Sports Composite ranking, Washington put on an impressive display of skill and touch as he continues to evolve and adjust as a player. When he first hit the scene two years ago, Washington was a long and lanky four man with some athleticism and ability to get out in transition. Now, he’s overcome a knee injury and has turned himself into a skilled faceup player. His footwork in the post is well above average, he is a very dangerous shooter from deep and he has a presence on the floor beyond his years. The maturity he plays with is remarkable. Whether it is nearby Purdue, Indiana, Michigan State or any of the other programs chasing him, whoever gets him will be happy to coach him."

It’s tough to tell who is currently in the lead for Washington in this 2022 recruiting class but with UNC showing interest, we fully expect them to be a contender moving forward. Davis and his staff have yet to land a commitment in the 2022 class and with NCAA recruiting restrictions being lifted next month, things should start to heat up a bit more.
