UNC Basketball: Wes Miller ‘serious candidate’ for head coaching position
Former UNC basketball player and current UNC-Greensboro head coach Wes Miller is considered a “serious candidate” for the Cincinnati Bearcats’ head coaching position.
UNC-Greensboro head coach Wes Miller has been named in a number of head coaching searches over the past month. Most notably, Miller was a legitimate contender to fill the recent head coaching vacancy at the University of North Carolina; one that was ultimately entrusted to former Roy Williams assistant Hubert Davis.
And now, the 38-year-old Miller, who was born in the same city that he now coaches in, is emerging as a “serious candidate” for the Cincinnati Bearcats’ head coaching position. The job became available when Cincinnati head coach John Brannen was fired last Friday following a 12-11 record overall and an 8-6 mark in conference play for the 2020-21 season. Ohio State assistant Ryan Pedon is also a front-runner for the Bearcats’ head coaching job; that according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.
Miller has seen considerable success in his current position, putting together a record of 185-135 in 10 seasons with the program. That includes no less than 21 victories in each of the last five seasons, and four first-place finishes in the Southern Conference since 2012. He’s taken the Spartans to the NCAA Tournament on two occasions, the most recent being during the 2021-22 season. UNC-Greensboro was awarded a 13-seed in the tourney, and ultimately lost to fourth-seeded Florida State in a close Round of 64 game.
Miller has received strong endorsements in the past from former UNC head coach and Hall-of-Famer Roy Williams, the most recent of which came at the latter’s retirement press conference in Chapel Hill two weeks ago.
