UNC Basketball: Will Tar Heels pursue Texas Tech transfer?
By Zack Pearson
New UNC Basketball head coach Hubert Davis was introduced just under a week ago as the next guy for the job in Chapel Hill following the retirement of Roy Williams.
While Davis has only been on the job for a few days, he’s already had a busy start to his new gig including landing a transfer out of Virginia. Davis does have some work to do with this North Carolina roster as there are still a lot of question marks about who will be here and the rotations for next season.
But as we continue on through the offseason, Davis and his staff will have some opportunities to land a few players in the NCAA’s transfer portal. And on Sunday, another player entered his name into that portal.
Former Georgetown and Texas Tech guard Mac McClung announced on Sunday that the will enter the transfer portal as well as the NBA Draft. Here is the message he posted via Twitter:
The former three-star recruit went viral for his high school and AAU mixtapes and then eventually committed to play for Patrick Ewing at Georgetown. After one year there, the Virginia native transferred to Texas Tech where he helped lead the Red Raiders to the NCAA Tournament before they were bounced in the second round.
But now with head coach Chris Beard bolting for Texas, McClung is in the transfer portal and might be worth a look if he doesn’t stay in the draft,
McClung averaged 15.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 41.9 percent from the field. He’s a scoring point guard that could be worth a look in an offense that needs production. However, the Tar Heels do have Caleb Love, R.J. Davis and Anthony Harris returning. Would Davis look at McClung for a fit at point guard and shift Love to the shooting guard spot? At this time there’s no interest from the Tar Heels but let’s keep an eye on the situation in the coming days.
