UNC Basketball: Tar Heels land first commit of Hubert Davis era
The UNC basketball program has landed its first commitment of the Hubert Davis era.
Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels have landed their first commitment since the retirement of former UNC head coach and Hall-of-Famer Roy Williams.
Justin McKoy, a former 3-star prospect and two-year player at the University of Virginia, committed to the Tar Heels on Saturday afternoon after receiving a scholarship offer from Davis on Wednesday. This comes just over a week after McKoy announced that he’d be leaving the Cavaliers and entering the NCAA transfer portal.

"“He [Hubert Davis] talked about how he saw me fitting in the offense, and told me he liked me as player on the court and a person off the court,” McKoy told Inside Carolina. “He said I fit the Carolina culture. I’ve gotten a lot better offensively. My shot has gotten a lot more consistent. I can put it on the floor. The two main things I’d say I’ve really improved on are my lateral quickness – I can guard multiple positions on the floor – and then my rebounding.”"
A 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward from Cary, North Carolina, McKoy played 11.2 minutes per game during his sophomore season at UVA, averaging 3.5 points and 3.3 rebounds. He connected on 48.3 percent of his field goal attempts, 33.3 percent from three-point range and 80 percent at the free throw line.
McKoy, who has three years of college eligibility remaining, is expected to play a hybrid forward role with the Tar Heels. North Carolina’s roster appears to be far from set at this point, and there’s no telling who will be in the starting lineup when the season rolls around this fall. With his size and developing skill set, though, McKoy should be able to get plenty of run in his first season with the Tar Heels.
