UNC Basketball: Hubert Davis offers Virginia transfer

New UNC Basketball head coach Hubert Davis is wasting no time on the recruiting trail here in April. Just a day after he held his introductory press conference in the Dean E. Smith Center, Davis was able to do some recruiting.

The head coach officially offered a scholarship to former Virginia forward Justin McKoy who is currently in the transfer portal.

Davis contacted a few prospects in the transfer portal on Wednesday, including McKoy as Tar Heel Illustrated confirmed on Thursday morning:

McKoy elected to transfer out of Virginia’s program after just two seasons in Charlottesville and is taking advantage of the new transfer rules that doesn’t force players to sit out for a year.

The former three-star recruit is a Cary, North Carolina native and received an offer from the Tar Heels back in April of 2019. He decided to go with Virginia for his college decision and averaged 3.5 points, 3.3 rebounds per game and shot 48.3 percent from the field as a sophomore.

McKoy saw an uptick in minutes as a sophomore, playing in 11.4 minutes per game compared to the 7.4 as a freshman.

With a need on the wing, it makes sense for Davis to reach out to forwards as well as players in the post. The Tar Heels are set to lose both Garrison Brooks and Day’Ron Sharpe, while Walker Kessler is in the transfer portal and Armando Bacot is testing the NBA Draft waters. There could be a lot of turnover on the roster for next season, proving to be a tough offseason for Davis in his first year as head coach.

McKoy entered the transfer portal on March 30th and has received interest from teams already as he will be a recruit to watch here in the offseason.
