The search for the next UNC Basketball head coach is officially over as the program has hired former player and assistant Hubert Davis to replace Roy Williams. The move comes just a few days after Williams announced he was retiring and an emergency meeting between the board of trustees sealed it as news broke in the afternoon that Davis was the guy.

It was clear the university wanted to move fast and not take a long time in this search as the transfer portal has already been very active this offseason as well as getting someone in there to update recruits in future classes.

But as for the Tar Heels’ 2021 recruiting class, this news just solidified earlier reports that their two commits were staying.

Both D’Marco Dunn and Dontrez Styles are still 100% committed to North Carolina and made that clear again on Monday night following the hiring of Davis. USA Today’s Jason Jordan confirmed that Dunn will remain committed while All Tar Heels’ Quierra Luck confirmed that Styles was remaining committed.

While this isn’t surprising, it’s still great news for UNC’s program.

Davis is an excellent recruiter and has done a good job alongside Williams over the past 10 years, making him a good fit for the job. In addition to that, he has relationships with current players and recruiting targets, helping his case a bit.

The Tar Heels are going to lose some pieces this year and have already seen Walker Kessler and Walker Miller enter the transfer portal while Day’Ron Sharpe will test the NBA waters. With a two-man 2021 recruiting class, Davis has the task of attempting to replace that production and get off to a good start. The future of this program is in the hands of these recruiting classes and let’s hope they turn out to be big ones.
