UNC Basketball: Will Jerry Stackhouse a legit candidate?
What North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham considers “the best job in college basketball” has many fans on their heels awaiting the toughest question. Who is the answer to filling the suit blazing legacy coach Roy Williams left behind?
Many names have been debated on who should be the next head coach of UNC basketball. Some believe it could come down to current assistant Hubert Davis or UNCG head coach Wes Miller, but another name has been drawing some buzz.
Jerry Stackhouse a former Tar Heel and actively the Vanderbilt head coach has had fan support as the next leader of UNC basketball. Ed Cota a Tar Heel legend even vouched for Stackhouse as the next head coach going on his private IG account with a post.
“My guy @Jerrystackhouse42 is a Great choice Checks ALL the boxes and I Hope he gets a fair Crack at it”.
Cota had a picture of Stackhouse with the message and included Wes Miller and Rasheed Wallace among a few others he would like to see as the next coach. This could be a big endorsement for Stackhouse with Bubba Cunningham explaining how important it was to hear from former Tar Heel players for input on the coaching search.
Reggie Bullock also took to Twitter voicing support for Stackhouse to become the next coach.
Stackhouse was named D-League coach of the year for the 2016-2017 season where he led the 905 Raptors to an impressive 39-11 record. The 905 Raptors were known for their great defense under Stackhouse and set a record of 21 wins on the road. In 2019 Stackhouse became the Vanderbilt coach and currently holds a record of 20-37 in the two seasons with the team.
