With the news of Roy Williams retiring as the UNC Basketball coach a few days old, there has been very little on potential recruits and what the roster could look like.

As it stands now, the Tar Heels are set to lose Walker Kessler and Walker Miller to the transfer portal as well as Day’Ron Sharpe to the NBA. Garrison Brooks is a senior and does have the option to come back to the program.

There was some good news regarding both UNC commits in D’Marco Dunn and Dontrez Styles both staying “committed for now” but with the coaching search ongoing, there won’t be much on current or former players until that is situated.

Prior to Williams retiring, the Tar Heels received some bad news with Kessler making the decision to transfer from the program. The rumblings have been that he’s looking for a better fit in terms of an offensive system. But did Williams retiring change anything?

Unfortunately, for UNC fans it hasn’t changed anything as Kessler is still set to transfer out of the program and it appears as if Gonzaga is the favorite to land him. Kessler did post a message to Instagram thanking Williams despite some recent rumblings of what happened with his transfer:

We aren’t here to blame Walker for his decision at all, he’s his own man and has the freedom to do what he wants. He will find a new place to land and will be a very good player for wherever he goes in his transfer situation.

As the Tar Heels continue to look for their new head coach, the status of recruits and players will certainly be a big deal as the program looks to keep stockpiling talent and build for the future.
