Carolina family

Rasheed Wallace understands the Carolina family, and the value of the player-coach relationship. If ever there were a player that needed mentoring, it was Wallace. Dean Smith at UNC, and then later Larry Brown in Detroit, filled this role for the sometimes volatile Wallace. He is now fulfilling that role himself at Jordan High School in Durham. His life experiences could be quite relatable to the new generation of players.

There is no replacing Hall-of-Famer Roy Williams with a like-for-like option. As Tar Heel fans, we need to embrace change. UNC would be well-served with another impassioned presence at the helm. Bubba Cunningham is unlikely to find another candidate with the same fire that Rasheed Wallace would bring to Carolina basketball at this juncture.

Plus, I’m going to throw this out there: Wallace understands the modern game. I bet he wouldn’t mind a big stepping out on the perimeter for a good look at a three. Personally, I think it would be awesome seeing Sheed kissing a player’s forehead — à la Roy — as they walk off the court during the last game of their UNC career. As sad as we all are that Roy has retired, the sun still rises and Carolina basketball will continue. Let’s have some fun, and remember it’s a game!
