Does the UNC basketball program have a shot at signing a 4-star Charlotte native that decommitted from Marquette on Monday night?

Charlotte native and class of 2021 Marquette commit Jonas Aidoo has joined the more than 1,000 Division I basketball players to enter the NCAA transfer portal this spring. He made his decision official via Twitter on Monday night, thanking the recently fired former head coach of the Golden Eagles, Steve Wojciechowski.

Georgia, Houston, Kansas, Miami, NC State, Tennessee and Wake Forest were among the programs recruiting Aidoo the first time around, but it was North Carolina on the horn with the 6-foot-11, 215-pound center immediately following his announcement on Monday night.

The Tar Heels recently lost sensational freshman center Day’Ron Sharpe to the NBA Draft, as well as rising 7-footer Walker Kessler and oft-injured reserve big man Sterling Manley to transfer. With roster space in the UNC front court and extra scholarships to go around, Roy Williams and his staff are looking to add another big body to their roster next fall.

Aidoo was a standout at Liberty Heights Athletic Institute, and the No. 60 prospect in the class of 2021 according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s the seventh-ranked center in the class, and No. 1 in the state of North Carolina — and a player that the Tar Heels would love to have on board next season. As of now, he would obviously have to wait his turn behind soon-to-be junior Armando Bacot and potentially fifth-year senior Garrison Brooks. As we’ve seen in recent days, though, that could quickly change.

Either way, North Carolina would be well-served to have a player like Aidoo on the roster, whether it’s in a starting position or as a first option off the bench. We aren’t aware of a timeline for a commitment from Aidoo at this juncture, but I’d assume that his second recruitment won’t last too long. Look for the Tar Heels to make a strong push for Aidoo in the coming days, as his list of suitors will be long and distinguished.
