A former UNC basketball standout and current head coach compares the Tar Heels’ top 2023 prospect to NBA legend and Hall-of-Famer Allen Iverson.

Robert Dillingham is a sophomore at Combine Academy in Charlotte, North Carolina where Jeff McInnis, former UNC basketball standout and 11-year NBA veteran, is his head coach. In a recent interview with Clture’s Cameron Lee, McInnis compared Dillingham to “an Allen Iverson-type scoring guard”, noting that he has relentless drive to score the basketball at all three levels.

That’s high praise coming from a guy who starred at North Carolina under one of the game’s most legendary and beloved coaches, and went on to play at the highest level for more than a decade. It’s also good news for Roy Williams and the Tar Heels, as he is currently their top target in the class of 2023, and one that is already believed to be favoring UNC.

Dillingham’s first Crystal Ball prediction back on December 24 came from an NC State contributor, and the second, which came just a day later, was from Director of Basketball Scouting Jerry Meyer. Both predictions came with a high level of confidence (8 and 7, respectively), while the third and most recent prediction, one from Travis Branham on February 17, was projected with a medium confidence level (6). He’s also got a FutureCast prediction from Rivals’ Jamie Shaw that came in late January.

Despite being more than two years away from stepping foot onto a college campus, Dillingham has scholarship offers from a handful of schools. North Carolina, the obvious headliner of the bunch, is joined by DePaul, Middle Tennessee State, Ole Miss, Tennessee Tech, USF, Wichita State and Winthrop. He’s also seen interest from the likes of Kansas and Tennessee, though neither have extended an offer to this point. Make no mistake about it, though, Dillingham will have interest from nearly every high major program in college basketball by the time it’s all said and done.

Dillingham is the No. 10 prospect in the class of 2023 according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s ranked second among players at his position, and No. 2 in the state of North Carolina. And he’s bound to be one of the most sought after recruits in the nation by the time it’s all said and done.
