The UNC basketball program won’t be able to get elite-shooting point guard Storm Murphy to campus next season.

North Carolina fans are hoping that the Tar Heels will be able to lure in an elite-shooting transfer player next season, but it won’t be former Wofford standout Storm Murphy.

One of the best shooters to hit the NCAA transfer portal in 2021, Murphy made the decision on Saturday night to join the Virginia Tech Hokies next season. Murphy will be taking advantage of the NCAA extending an extra year of eligibility to winter sport student-athletes due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the 2020-21 season.

Murphy hit nearly double the amount of three-pointers that any individual Virginia Tech player hit this season, and he did it at a 40 percent clip. He also played more minutes, scored more points and dished out more assist than any of them, so his value to the team next season will obviously be immense.

The same could have been said about his value to the Tar Heels, had he chosen to suit up for the blue blood program next season. He played more minutes, scored more points and had more assists, as well as having a better shooting percentage from three-point range and at the foul line than any Tar Heel (among qualified players).

Alas, Roy Williams and company will have to look elsewhere — and there’s no evidence to suggest that they reached out to Murphy or would have at any point — for the knock-down shooter that this year’s team (sans freshman shooting guard Kerwin Walton) has been missing.
