UNC Basketball: Where Tar Heels stand in updated NET rankings
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball team saw their Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament run come to an end Friday night at the hands of a very good Florida State team. UNC went 2-1 in the tournament over the past week and was the only team to play three games this year due to other teams seeing their opponents drop out due to COVID.
While UNC fell short of their goal to win the ACC Tournament, the sights are now set on the bigger picture — the NCAA Tournament.
After going 2-1 in the ACC, the Tar Heels may have upped their stock a bit as some brackets have them as high as a No. 7 seed. With Selection Sunday just a day away, the Tar Heels have to now hope they did enough to bump that seed as high as they could.
But what about their NET ranking? Following the Florida State game, UNC saw their NET ranking actually move UP. Say what?
Yes, the Tar Heels have checked in at No. 32 on the updated NET rankings jumping one spot from Friday despite the loss.
Now there’s a few factors in this. Yes, the Tar Heels lost but they lost to a really damn good Florida State team who is up two spots from No. 24 to No. 22 in the new rankings. Plus, a few teams ahead of them fell including Oregon as the Ducks were upset on Friday night.
This is certainly good news for the Tar Heels as NET is a good indicator of where the NCAA measures the wins and the losses that teams have had this season.
About a month ago, things were getting a little too close for comfort in terms of UNC on the bubble but now the Tar Heels have not only locked up a spot but have upped their stock as well.
