UNC Basketball: Roy Williams passes Bobby Knight on all-time wins list
By Zack Pearson
UNC Basketball head coach Roy Williams just keeps making history.
With North Carolina winning their first two games of the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference on Wednesday and Thursday, the head coach has climbed the all-time wins list and has now passed another legend. Following Wednesday’s win over Notre Dame, Williams tied former Indiana and Texas Tech head coach Bobby Knight with 902 wins.
Then just over 24 hours later, Williams passed Knight and earned win No. 903.
Williams is now in sole possession of third place on the all-time wins list for men’s division 1 basketball coaches, finally passing Knight. He’s earned milestone win No. 900 and now No. 902 and 903 in the past two weeks.
While there have been some struggles this season, the Tar Heels appear to be playing their best ball of late. In the past two weeks they have wins at home against Florida State and Duke plus have now earned two wins in the ACC Tournament. What was once a team that was on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament has turned into a lock and potentially a team that can improve their seed to even No. 7 going into next week’s tournament.
This UNC team has found a way to gel here when it matters most, running their offense through their bigs and Williams has them playing spirited basketball down the stretch. But now the test gets tougher for Williams and his Tar Heels as he looks for win No. 904 against a Florida State team in which UNC split the regular season series with.
After losing on the road in February, the Tar Heels erased a double-digit halftime lead in Chapel Hill to stun the Seminoles. They are going to need an all-around good performance on Friday to punch their ticket to the title game on Saturday.
