UNC basketball obliterates Notre Dame in ACC Tournament second round behind record-setting performance on offensive glass

443. 101. 441. Final. 59

North Carolina sophomore center Armando Bacot scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in the Tar Heels’ 101-59 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the second round of the ACC Tournament on Wednesday night.

Bacot hit 7-of-10 shots for the game, and 6-of-7 at the free throw line. Freshman reserve center Walker Kessler had his best overall game in a Carolina uniform, scoring 16 points to go along with career-highs in rebounds (12) and blocks (8). Kessler’s eight blocked shots are a new Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament record, as were the Tar Heels’ 25 offensive rebounds.

Seven of Day’Ron Sharpe’s 10 rebounds were on the offensive end of the court where he was absolutely dominant, scoring 14 points on a 7-for-10 shooting performance. The UNC freshman back court of Caleb Love and R.J. Davis combined for 29 points on an 11-for-23 shooting night. They also knocked down 5-of-11 three-pointers, and controlled the game from start to finish.

The Tar Heels shot 50.6 percent for the game, 37.5 percent from long-range and converted 14-of-18 free throws. They outrebounded the Irish by 24, assisted on 19 of their 39 made buckets and limited their turnovers for the game to just 11.

Notre Dame was led by Prentiss Hubb and Nate Laszewski, who scored 13 points a piece. Juwan Durham was the only other Notre Dame player to score in double-figures (10), as the team struggled through a 19-for-61 shooting performance. The Irish hit just 7-of-26 from long-range, and turned the ball over 16 times. They finish their 2020-21 campaign with an 11-15 record.

The Tar Heels, on the other hand, move on to play Virginia Tech in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. We’ll have more on that matchup in the coming hours, and complete coverage of the game from Greensboro tomorrow evening.
