UNC Basketball: Tar Heels the team to beat early for 2023 PG?
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program is getting set to host Duke in the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season finale on Saturday as this 2020-21 college basketball season begins to wind down. But while it’s been a challenging one for Roy Williams and his staff, the future of the program is still in the recruiting classes.
After turning in an impressive 2020 class that should see most players return next season, the Tar Heels have two players signed in 2021. However, the 2022 and 2023 classes might be in better shape early on.
On Christmas, UNC officially offered their first prospect in the 2023 class when five-star guard Robert Dillingham announced his offer. Since then, Dillingham has picked up a total of 8 offers early in his recruitment.
But are the Tar Heels the early favorites? UNC has picked up a big crystal ball prediction on 247 Sports from national recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer. While the crystal balls don’t guarantee anything and it’s still early in his recruitment, it’s a good sign moving forward.
On Saturday, Rivals reporter Jamie Shaw wrote on Dillingham after talking to the prospect to give an update on his recruitment. And there was more good news for the Tar Heels as the guard revealed that UNC and Kansas are the two teams recruiting him the hardest:
"“I just got UNC. I also got Kansas, Clemson, Florida, Florida State and a bunch of other high majors.” Dillingham said. “I have been talking to a lot of schools recently. Carolina and Kansas are sticking out for really being on me. It’s a lot of schools, really.”"
As mentioned above, it’s early in his recruitment but it really feels like the Tar Heels are the team to beat for Dillingham but could very well be challenged by Kansas as time goes on.
Dillingham is ranked as a five-star recruit and the No. 11 overall player per the 247 Sports recruiting rankings.
