Rare Air Jordan I signed by Michael Jordan up for auction
By Zack Pearson
Every once and a while a rare piece of history that is connected to basketball legend Michael Jordan becomes available for auction. And you can guarantee that no matter what it is, the item will sell for a hefty price.
That’s the case again here in early March as a pair of Air Jordan I’s that were not only worn by Jordan but signed by the GOAT is available for auction. Listed on Mears Online Auctions are a pair of original Air Jordan I’s from 1985 used and autographed with the current price tag over $400K.
The lot is titled “Grandma’s Son” referring to a Grandma who received the pair of shoes from Jordan himself after a trip. The story says her grandson (remains unnamed) was being recruited by several top programs including UNC. She was able to meet Jordan at a Chicago Bulls game where he gave her the game-used shoes and signed them.
Here is some info from the listing:
"Our consignor had a very, very special story to tell when he met with MEARS Online Auctions. For 35 years, Grandma safely kept a gift that was given to her by the greatest athlete of all time. But, before talking about the present, we have to talk about Grandma. Our consignor described his Grandmother as regal, good hearted, kind, God fearing, sharing, and always willing to help others. With a life long love of the game of basketball, she gave back to her community, proud of the lives she helped by introducing neighborhood kids to the sport."
Now, the Air Jordan I model is iconic in the sneaker industry and is one of the more sought-after models in general. Especially if it’s an original pair.
But this pair is not only original, but it’s also game-worn and autographed driving the price up even more in this auction. Many collectors and Jordan fans would love to have their hands a pair like this, however it’s going to cost you a pretty penny.
