UNC Basketball: Coby White outduels former Blue Devils
Former UNC basketball standout Coby White outduels a trio of former Blue Devils in Bulls’ victory over Pelicans
Since joining the Bulls’ starting lineup at the start of the 2020-21 season, second-year point guard Coby White has been one of Chicago’s most dynamic scorers. And seeing as he’s pulling down 5.2 rebounds and dishing out 5.1 assists to go along with his 16-point scoring average, he’s also been one of the team’s most versatile options.
White continues to show why Chicago routinely leans on him to put up big numbers in the scoring column, much like he did on Wednesday night against the New Orleans Pelicans and their trio of former Duke Blue Devils.
White scored 25 points against the likes of Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and JJ Redick in a 128-124 Bulls victory. And although the former Dukies certainly got their own against White’s Bulls — 71 points combined to be exact — White helped guide his team to the promised land with a seven-point fourth quarter that included two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining in regulation to ice the game.
The former Tar Heel one-and-done hit 8-of-16 shots for the game, and 4-of-7 from three-point range. He also knocked down 5-of-5 at the free throw line to go along with three assists, two rebounds and a steal. He committed just one turnover in 33 minutes of play.
It was the sixth consecutive game that White has scored at least 19 points, and his 27th double-digit scoring effort in 34 appearances this season. He’s shooting just under 42 percent for the season, and nearly 35 percent from three-point range. His 89 percent mark at the charity stripe makes him one of the league’s best free throw shooters, and he’s showing tremendous durability by logging over 33 minutes a night while playing in each of the Bulls’ 34 games this season.
